Review by smart shopper for Rating: I purchased this to replace a 5 year old B&D cordless string trimmer. I have been impressed by the built quality of this unit compared to the B&D. It is light weight however it is built with quality materials. It has plenty of power and the power does not degrade quickly like the B&D. Since this unit uses lithium batteries, the power is consistent from beginning to end. The items that I did not like about this trimmer is that it is only 10″ compared to 12″-14″ found on most cordless trimmers and the spool is small. The spool will need to be replaced frequently since it is a less than 1/2 the size of a standard spool string container. The string that this unit uses is of highly quality and is textured which does cut through grass and weeds easily. Even though it is only 10″, the quality of the string and power provided by the motor makes up for it only being 10″. B&D did recently release a lithium powered trimmer. I was able to check out the B&D trimmer at my local hardware store however the quality construction and ergonomics of the Worx is superior to the B&D lithium trimmer. On the down side of having the Worx instead of the B&D is that replacement spools will need to be ordered online since no one that I know in my area carries them. B&D lithium trimmer uses the spool string as the non-lithium model that is easy to find. One thing I do want to point out about the B&D lithium trimmer is that the string is very thin and wears out quickly. It does not have the same cutting power as the Worx string.

After eight years of mixing gas and oil and tirelessly trying to start my engine, i decided to look at battery since my father in law had done so as well. I wanted lithium with the highest voltage rating. After hours of research i came across this gem. I happened across it because Sam’s Club offers it as their battery string trimmer. I thought “well their buyers are usually smart.” Unfortunately it is a new product and, at the time, had no reviews. Usually my type A personality and shopping frugality wouldn’t have allowed me to purchase this. Well first of all to the other reviewers there is a note from the manufacturer stating that you should discharge the battery completely and recharge before use. I did so and thought the battery would never stop. So… kudos to the battery portion. Now comes the interesting part. Looking at the string, which is only replaceable by guess who (sun joe), it is literally a piece of dental floss. Smaller than any other string trimmer I found. The instructions state only sun joe string can replace and the only size is .059″. All others use minimum of .065″ with other options available. I’m used to using much larger string in a gas trimmer up to .095″. Tried it anyway and very unhappy. It was very fast, but so small it wouldn’t throw the grass and consequently cut the same blade many times creating a kind of grass smoothy on the debris protector. And I heard that line being let out so much I thought I would run out of an entire spool in one cutting. Needless to say I trimmed a total of 5-6 feet taking a good minute per foot. AWFUL! I couldn’t get that thing taken apart fast enough, cleaned and reboxed to return to Amazon. My hat’s off to Amazon. Although it cost me ten dollars in the end, had I bought it online from Sam’s ($109) I would have paid more plus shipping. My decision: going with a man’s machine to mix gas and oil again. But being more careful about the mixture and using a higher octane of fuel to prevent gumming. They also make a premixed formula with everything added already (but I’m too cheap to pay four times as much as doing it myself). Hope this helps some of you who are used to more power. And as I said this is a gem, a diamond in the rough if you will, with good torque, high voltage and RPMs. Unfortunaltely the engineers underestimated necessary string size required for a good trim. Although I expected a decrease in power this machine completely turned me off to “Green”, much like Michigan State does! Go Blue!Rating: 1 / 5

I looked at different cordless grass trimmers. I was tired of the gas trimmers that were hard to start and hard to hold. My muscles would quiver an hour after using a gas trimmer. I looked at the green works but found it too expensive. I wanted something simple. When I did receive the Sun Joe that battery was defective but they sent me a new one already charged up through UPS. I guess it had been a manufacturing problem since there was a letter that came with the Sun Joe that there were a handful of defective batteries. All in all so far I’m in love with the thing. It’s powerful yet easy to hold. It’s a lithium ion battery which means it lasts longer than a ni-cad battery. What’s neat is you can use as both an edger and a trimmer and even has wheels to use as the edger. I trimmed both the front and backyard and did the edging and still have plenty of power left over. This one beats the black & decker and has more to offer. I do highly recommend it and see how reliable it will be over time. You no longer have to worry about if you can get it to start. You just press the button and go. I figured I saved over $100 just by getting this one versus the green works and about $23 over the black & decker. I asked and they will be coming out with a cordless blower in the future. This saves hassle and time as well as energy.Rating: 5 / 5
